Bank robbery suspect wanted ‘big show’ with FBI while threatening hostages

A Minnesota man who robbed a bank and held its employees hostages for hours apparently wanted to “go viral,” officials said.

Five people held hostage in the eight-hour standoff in St. Cloud Thursday said the 35-year-old man who allegedly held them captive wanted a “big show” with police, officials added.

Ray Reco McNeary was charged with aggravated robbery, one count of assault in the second degree and multiple counts of kidnapping after the incident at the Wells Fargo bank, according to KIMT3 News.

McNeary came to the bank upset over what he said was fraud on his account — and became even more agitated when the account could not be located, according to a criminal complaint.

He forced the bank manager to get him a bag of money from the vault, then threw some of the cash on the floor and began grabbing the victim’s cellphones and damaging the devices by putting them in water or slamming them around, according to the station.

McNeary threatened to use the bank manager as a shield, and they would “die together,” according to the complaint.

He then told his hostages and law enforcement that he intended to kill those inside, “kill himself, or put law enforcement in a position that they would kill him,” the complaint said.

McNeary was apparently unarmed during the incident.

St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson said the situation ended as well as it possibly could when four of the hostages were released or escaped, and a fifth hostage “made a run for the door” right as St. Cloud police and the FBI arrested McNeary without incident. All of the hostages were bank employees, according to police.
