Speaking in the Commons this afternoon, Ms Dorries confirmed the Government’s plans to freeze the broadcaster’s funding for the next two years.

She said the lack of increase in cost for the fee would help families struggling with the cost of living crisis.

Nadine Dorries said the licence fee would then rise in line with inflation for the four years after that.

On social media yesterday the minister said after 2027 the licence fee would end.

She wrote: “This licence fee announcement will be the last.

“The days of the elderly being threatened with prison sentences and bailiffs knocking on doors, are over.”

However, in the Commons she hinted the Government could still commit to the licence fee in the long term.
