Billy Gilmour faces an uncertain future at Brighton after only joining the club so that he could play under Graham Potter, according to reports.

The 21-year-old midfielder left Chelsea on deadline day to move to the Amex Stadium for £9m. He was initially unwilling to depart his boyhood club, but eventually opted to join the Seagulls after speaking to Potter, with Thomas Tuchel giving him the green light to leave Stamford Bridge.

However, just six days after completing the transfer, Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea and replaced by Potter the next day.

This leaves Brighton managerless for the moment, and Gilmour is likely to be unhappy that Potter has left after telling friends that he only went to the South Coast club to work with the Englishman, as reported by The Sun.

Gilmour only made a single cameo appearance for Brighton in their 5-2 win against Leicester last weekend before Potter exited the club.

He must now wait to see if he fits into the next manager’s plans at Brighton.

Brighton are currently exploring their options as they look for Potter’s successor, with Kjetil Knutsen and Roberto De Zerbi reportedly in the running for the role.

Knutsen has done a fine job at Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt in recent years, leading his side to consecutive league titles in 2020 and 2021, while also overseeing a stunning 6-1 win against Roma in the Europa Conference League last term.

Meanwhile, De Zerbi has largely made his name in his homeland of Italy, impressing with his attacking style of play at Sassuolo before briefly managing Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

Gilmour will hope that he can still make an impact under whoever his next manager may be after a torrid last 12 months.

He was loaned out to Norwich last season, but could not prevent them from finishing bottom of the Premier League.

He also suffered an ankle issue during his spell with the Canaries, while the fans turned on him during a heavy defeat against Crystal Palace back in December.

His move to Brighton was seen as a fresh start for the youngster, but he must now prove himself to another manager following Potter’s departure.
