Brexit LIVE: Project fear dismantled by Dover port boss– freight traffic at pre–2016 level

Freight traffic at Dover – Britain’s biggest “roll on roll off” port – has returned to its pre-Brexit and, perhaps more importantly, its pre-pandemic levels despite fearmongering ahead of the 2016 referendum.

Doug Bannister was asked “are you mad?” by his family when he joined the port as its Chief Executive weeks before the original March 2019 Brexit date.

But he now reports trade at Dover has not been a victim of long-term decline as a result of Britain leaving the EU.

Mr Bannister told the Observer any problems still impacting the port as a result of Brexit are being ironed out and that business will continue to get “slicker”.
