And the most ridiculous free kick of the year award goes to… Lachie Neale gets done for shoving Jai Newcombe in the chest – even though the Hawk did EXACTLY the same thing to him just before

  • Umpire blew whistle near end of first quarter for nothing more than chest shove
  • Neale had copped a few identical shoves from Jai Newcombe before free given
  • Campbell Brown reacted by saying it wouldn’t be a free kick in Auskick

If there’s been a sillier free kick given in 2022 than the one blown against Lachie Neale during Brisbane’s clash with the Hawks on Sunday, we’d like to know what it is.

With just over a minute remaining in the first quarter, the 2020 Brownlow Medalist clashed with Jai Newcombe near the boundary.

The pair exchanged shoves in the chest – something that players have done in practically every Aussie Rules game ever played – but the umpire blew the whistle and awarded the free to the Hawks midfielder.

Welcome to footy in 2022, when a simple shove to the chest is worth a free kick - even when the player doing the shoving has just been on the receiving end of exactly the same treatment

Reaction to the call was swift – and furious.

‘That wouldn’t be a free kick in AusKick,’ Campbell Brown fumed.

‘Wow. That is absolutely incredible to me,’ said commentator Brian Taylor.

They were being polite compared to the fans.

‘That free kick against Neale was an absolute joke,’ Ronny Lerner wrote on Twitter.

‘Genuinely one of the worst calls. He was hit multiple times before he retailiated in the same measure. Pathetic,’ came the tweet from the Beyond The Boundary Fan Account.

‘All clubs on behalf of their members, shoudl write an open letter to the umpires/AFL. We know we are not allowed to dissent, but…WTF?’ Cranky Old Grogu tweeted.

At halftime, Hawks legend Dermott Brereton was left lost for words when he was asked about the umpire’s call and said he couldn’t believe the whistle had been blown.
