Camilla WILL be Queen when Charles takes throne – 'No doubt!'

Camilla received a special honour from the Queen at the beginning of the year which has widely been seen as a heartfelt gift and gesture of appreciation from the monarch. As of January 1, Camilla was appointed Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The honour is the highest possible in British civil and military rankings, dating back to the fourteenth century.

Those designated as Knights of the Garter are personal choices of the Queen, and reserved for those who have held prominent positions in public office, or have shown themselves to serve the country or the Queen in a particularly significant way.

The appointments do not have to be approved by the Prime Minister or Parliament.

Putting Camilla within this small circle of the Royal Garter is a “unifying gesture” that shows there is “no doubt” about Camilla’s future role, according to royal biographer Hugo Vickers.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Mr Vickers, whose list of biographies includes the Queen Mother, emphasised “there is no greater honour” than the Garter, and no “better indication of the respect in which [Camilla] is held by the Queen”.

Crucially, he added, “it also gives the Duchess an elevated position in her own right should she outlive her husband”.

This leaves “no doubt” about her secure position as a senior royal – “Camilla is central to the future of the British monarchy”.

The Duchess of Cornwall has previously received numerous honours that cemented her prominence following her wedding to Prince Charles in 2005.

She received the Royal Family Order in 2007, and the Royal Victorian Order in 2012.

He added: “She is the first wife of an heir to the throne ever to have received it in its recent history, certainly in the last 120 years.”

However, contrary to Mr Vickers’ confidence that Camilla “will be Charles’s Queen”, Clarence House has insisted this is not the title Camilla will gain when her husband becomes ruler.

The royal household said the Duchess of Cornwall will be styled as Princess Consort.

Clarence House said: “The intention is for the Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the Prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Despite this, Camilla’s newest appointment strengthened Mr Vickers’ conviction that Camilla could rise above the title of Princess Consort when the time comes.

He stressed the importance of timing in the decision as an indicator of its importance.

He noted that it comes “at the beginning of what will be the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year”, binding together the “inner circle of the Royal Family after 12 months of turbulence, controversy and deep personal loss”.

2021 was a year marked with increased anxiety over the Queen’s health, as she pulled out of a number of key trips and appearances in the latter half of the year.

Speculation around the health of the monarch led many to look to what the monarchy could look like after the Queen passes away.

It was also the year in which the Queen’s husband of over seven decades, Prince Philip, died, and the rift between the Firm and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex deepened.
