Chelsea’s statement on Sunday suggested the 29-year-old will join up with the squad later in the week.

The team made the 3,500 mile trip on Saturday after beating Plymouth in extra time but Thomas Tuchel did not join them as he tested positive for Covid-19 last week.

The German hopes to fly out and join the squad the following week should Chelsea remain in the competition.

The tournament, which Chelsea qualified for as UEFA Champions League winners, started last week when hosts Al Jazira defeated Tahitian side AS Pirae 4-1.

Chelsea have been pictured training in Abu Dhabi and will join the competition at the semi-final stage and will Al Hilal on Wednesday.

The London club has never won the Club World Cup having only played it one previous time in 2012.

A goal from Paolo Guerrero gave Corinthians the win over Chelsea in the 2012 final.

If Chelsea win in the semi-final, they will play either of Palmeiras or Al Ahly in the final.
