Romelu Lukaku’s criticism of Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel and his tactics was ‘misunderstood and misinterpreted’, according to former Blues midfielder Geremi.

The Belgian striker sparked controversy in December when he said he was ‘not happy’ with his bit-part role at Stamford Bridge in an interview with Sky Italia.

£97.5million man Lukaku expressed his affection for former club Inter Milan, saying he wanted to return one day, and was critical of the way Tuchel set the team up.

He later apologised for his remarks following talks with Tuchel but the whole affair could be about to flare up again after Lukaku posted a cryptic Snapchat message on Friday evening.

But Geremi spoke up for Lukaku ahead of Saturday’s FIFA Club World Cup final against Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.

Former Chelsea midfielder Geremi believes Lukaku's comments were 'misinterpreted'

Former Chelsea midfielder Geremi believes Lukaku’s comments were ‘misinterpreted’

He told the Daily Mirror: ‘I think that there was a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation about what happened.

‘His attitude says that he is happy, so I think it was all misinterpreted about what he said.

‘Of course, I think he can still give more, but he is trying. Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the world and every club would love to have him in the squad.’

Lukaku scored Chelsea’s winner in Wednesday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Saudi opponents Al-Hilal and will hope to fire them to victory in the tournament this weekend.

In total, he has scored nine goals and contributed two assists since returning to the club in the summer but has missed a number of games through injury and coronavirus.

Chelsea made heavy weather of beating Al-Hilal in midweek and will have to improve their performance if they are to overcome Copa Libertadores holders Palmeiras to win the Club World Cup for the first time.

The Blues lost to Corinthians in the 2012 final the last time they represented Europe.

Lukaku posted a message reading ‘If you have to force it, then it probably doesn’t fit’ on his Snapchat account on Friday night.

It isn’t known what the message refers to but many interpreted it as another dig at Tuchel two months after his ill-advised interview.
