Cleaning: Expert shares when to throw out cleaning products – ‘they do expire’

Cleaning products are essential to any household. Though many people have allocated cupboards or drawers for them, some forget to chuck out cleaning items that have passed their expiry date or are unaware that they even expire.

Cleaning Expert Nicola Rodriguez stressed the importance of regularly checking household cleaning products.

In fact, by not doing so, the bacteria will still be present.

Nicola said: “Disinfectants and cleaning products we use daily, the likes of bleaches, liquid laundry capsules, toilet cleaners, and antibacterial sprays, do expire and lose their effectiveness.”

In fact, all cleaning products should have their expiry date written on them so there’s no excuse not to know when to throw them out.

It’s important to replace cleaning cloths every couple of months to ensure they are properly clean.

The cleaning experts said: “If you use cloths or cleaning rags, you should ensure you are properly cleaning those.

“Wash weekly and leave them to dry properly. If you do this, you can afford to replace them every few months. This is the same rule for your microfibre cloths.”

This is also more sustainable than using wipes and using them daily.

The cleaning experts explained that if a tea towel is being used significantly, it should be washed daily.

They said: “If you use your tea towel to wipe away spills, it’s suggested that you wash them daily.

“If you have three to four tea towels, you can rotate them and then put them in a wash together at the end of the week when they have been used.

“But make sure you don’t throw damp tea towels in your laundry basket, where mould could potentially grow.”
