EU car ban: MEPs vote to ban all petrol and diesel car sales


Of a total of 612 votes, 339 were in favour of the proposals, while 249 MEPs rejected, alongside 24 who abstained.

This is part of the European Union’s fight against global warming, looking to target the main causes of carbon emissions.

Jan Huitema, a Dutch MEP for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, was the lead lawmaker on the policy.

Before the vote, he called for clarity in the car industry, designed at stimulating innovation and investment.

“Goal of 100 percent emission-free cars and vans by 2035 is maintained, nice try EPP (European People’s Party).

“‘Sustainable fuel’ credits? Rejected.

“Some much needed good news for the climate.”
