Ex-Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen VOMITS on pitch before carrying on in the second-half of Benfica’s match with bitter Portuguese rivals Porto

  • Jan Vertonghen vomited on the pitch during Benfica’s 3-1 defeat against Porto
  • The former Tottenham defender threw up just five minutes into the second-half
  • He bravely played on but couldn’t prevent Benfica from losing to their rivals

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen clearly didn’t feel too well during Benfica’s clash with Porto after he was shown vomiting on the pitch.

The 34-year-old veteran was caught bending over and throwing up in the second-half, before carrying on with the match between the two bitter Portuguese rivals on Thursday.

It happened five minutes into the second-half and despite not feeling at his best he was able to last the full duration of the game.

What was perhaps more sickly for the Belgian international was the fact that Benfica went on to be beaten 3-1 by Porto away from home.

The result leaves third-placed Benfica now seven points behind league leaders Porto and Sporting Lisbon who are level on points.

Porto had taken a 2-0 lead through goals by Fabio Vieira and veteran centre-back Pepe before Roman Yaremchuk pulled one back after 46 minutes.

Their challenge though effectively came to an end just three minutes later when Andre Almeida was sent off for a late challenge on Vieira.

Mehdi Taremi then added a third goal as Porto went on to take all three points in a 3-1 victory.

It’s not the first time that Vertonghen has been physically sick while in action.

He previously vomited on the pitch after being pushed to the limit in extreme heat during a 2014 World Cup game for Belgium in Brazil.

Vertonghen joined Benfica in the summer of 2020 after his Tottenham contract expired following eight seasons at the club.

He’s established himself as a key figure at the club, starting all but two league games this campaign and every Champions League group stage outing.

Despite drawing Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the group stage, Vertonghen helped Benfica progress to the last-16 at the expense of the Catalan giants.
