  • The 407-game midfielder inspired the bush side to a 48-point win over Garfield
  • The victory marks the second win of the ongoing Carlton Draft series

Four-time premiership midfielder Shaun Burgoyne has shown his class and athleticism by donning the black and white for bush footy side Dalyston Magpies and helping the club rise to a 48-point win over Garfield in the West Gippsland competition.

The 407-game legend kicked two tough goals and gave the crowd plenty of reminders of his stellar play in the AFL during his appearance in the Carlton Draught Series.

The series is an AFL Victoria initiative to help rebuild struggling footy communities with a lot of help from retired footy stars.

Five hundred clubs were nominated for special guest appearances by the likes of Eddie Betts and Nathan Jones, with Dalyston, 125km south-east of Melbourne, chosen to play host to the former Hawk and Power champion.

Dalyston were struggling for form, crowds and players before Burgoyne’s one-off addition to the side, winning only one game from nine matches and sitting 10th in a 12-team competition.

After a tough first quarter, Burgoyne slotted a silky 35-metre goal to inspire a hot streak of points for the home side.

The veteran was all smiles throughout the match, finishing the game by scoring the final major.

Dalyston’s win marks yet another upset victory for country clubs when a former superstar joins their team.

Last week Dale Thomas put in a mammoth performance to help the Nhill Tigers scrape home by two points for their first win in 1029 days.

AFL legends and Fox Footy personalities Nathan Buckley and Nick Riewoldt said Burgoyne’s presence was great for the rebuilding of grassroots footy.

‘I would’ve preferred him in black and white stipes a lot earlier than this, to be honest. He would’ve been handy,’ the former Collingwood coach laughed on Fox Footy’s Best on Ground.

‘They’re great pictures, aren’t they? It was a big act to follow after Dale Thomas last week put on an absolute clinic and delivered the first win in over three years,’ Riewoldt said.

‘Rolled into town, did his thing. Teams that Shaun Burgoyne plays for just win.’

Big names like Geelong three-time premiership winner Cam Mooney and all-Australian Alex Rance will lace up the boots in country Victoria in the coming weeks.
