Dan Wootton calls for Trumps return to Twitter amid Russia crisis

The former US President, known for his highly contentious statements, praised Mr Putin as Russia officially recognises the two separatist states of Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow has since moved assets into the two areas labelling the movement of troops mission as a “peacekeeping” operation, something named as “nonsense” by US officials.

Mr Trump took the opportunity to slam the incumbent Joe Biden for being “weak” over his handling of the situation, and said it would not have happened had he still been in the White House.

Declaring his thoughts on the situation, Mr Trump said: “Putin declares a big portion of Ukraine as independent. That’s wonderful. How smart is that? This is genius.”

Speaking on the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, the former President continued: “I knew Putin very well.

“I got along with him great. He’s got a lot of great charm and a lot of pride. He loves his country.

“I know Vladimir Putin very well, and he would have never done, during the Trump administration, what he is doing now, no way.

“Now it has begun, oil prices are going higher and higher, and Putin is not only getting what he always wanted, but getting, because of the oil and gas surge, richer and richer.”

Tweeting a statement backing up the notion of detrimental effects on oil and gas prices, former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev tweeted gas prices will run into the thousands for Europeans as a consequence of sanctioning Moscow.

He said: “German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has issued an order to halt the process of certifying the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

“Well. Welcome to the brave new world where Europeans are very soon going to pay €2,000 for 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas!”

Mr Trump also spoke of how he used to discuss an invasion of Ukraine with Mr Putin.

He said he would talk to Mr Putin about wanting to invade Ukraine stating: “I used to talk to him about it. I said, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not gonna do it’.

“But I could see he wanted it.”

Mr Trump’s appraisal of Mr Putin sparked strong condemnation of the former President.

A CNN edition column said: “No other living former president would dream of, let alone get away with, lionizing a Russian leader who may soon be waging the biggest war in Europe since World War 2 after declaring on Monday Ukraine has no right to exist.”

Taking another jab at Mr Biden, Mr Trump added: “If properly handled, there was absolutely no reason the situation currently happening in Ukraine should have happened at all.”

He said Russia had become “very, very rich” during the Biden administration, with oil prices “doubling and soon to be tripling and quadrupling”.

Mr Trump said: “The weak sanctions are insignificant relative to taking over a country and a massive piece of strategically located land.”

He said, if he was still president, oil prices would have remained low.

He added: “Now, what a mess our country is in.”

Mr Trump has remained relatively quiet on the Ukraine issue, in particular as he remains banned on Twitter, although he has recently launched his own platform called Truth Social.

However, speaking at a rally in Texas, Mr Trump did say: “Everyone in Washington is obsessing over how to protect Ukraine’s border – but the most important border in the world is not Ukraine’s border, it’s America’s border.”

Mr Trump is not the only high profile Republican backing Mr Putin.

Former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, a possible future Republican presidential candidate, also recently praised Mr Putin, as a “very talented” and gifted statesman.

Mr Pompeo said: “He was a KGB agent for goodness sakes. He knows how to use power. We should respect that.”

The numerous rallies Mr Trump has held in recent months suggest he is mustering support to run for the White House again in 2024.

Although he has not officially declared his intention to do so, at an Iowa rally in October the ex-president suggested “Make America Great Again, Again” as a potential slogan.

Further hinting at his ambitions to oust Mr Biden, speaking in an interview with Nigel Farage, Mr Trump said: “We’re going to have a very big ’22, and I think we’re going to have an even bigger ’24.”
