Gerard Pique has revealed how his relationship with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona went ‘sour’ in the manager’s final season before he left.
Barca mainstay Pique, who is playing in his 14th season for the club since re-joining from Manchester United in 2008. The pair enjoyed huge success when Guardiola was coach of a Barca team widely regarded as one of the greatest ever.
During 183 appearances under the now Manchester City boss, Pique was part of a side that won 14 major trophies, including four LaLiga titles and two Champions Leagues.

Speaking on a YouTube show, Pique admitted his final year under Guardiola was ‘brutal’
But Pique admitted that while he has a good relationship with Guardiola overall, things have certainly been turbulent over the years.
‘I met him in Abu Dhabi and we went for a coffee, I’ve always had a very close relationship with Pep,’ Pique told Jordi Wilder on YouTube via Marca.
‘There are moments of ups and downs. The first three years were a bed of roses but the last one was brutal, I’m sure it was also my fault.

‘You don’t know why things start to go wrong, relationships start to go sour. It was a very complicated year on a person level. I will always be grateful to him, we have a very good relationship.’
Pique has previously opened up on his struggles with Guardiola, saying in September 2021 that the coach’s desire to ‘control everything’ caused significant tensions that bizarrely got worse when Pique began dating Shakira.
The couple have been together since 2011 and have two children.

Pique said last year: ‘We reached an important point of tension with him (Guardiola), and with the dressing room in general. The rivalry with Jose Mourinho was very exhausting.
‘Pep wanted absolute control of everything that happened. I started dating Shakira and the relationship with him changed – now the relationship is perfect.
‘I had a lot of pressure. I felt that in training I had to do everything perfect. If there was a moment in which I thought about leaving Barca, it was that season (the summer of 2011).’
