Girl, 8, dragged by car after trying to stop mom from drunk driving

A California mother has been arrested after her 8-year-old daughter was dragged 300 feet alongside her car after the child tried to stop her from drunk driving, police say.

Erin Garcia, 44, was taken into custody late Friday night in Placentia, south-east of Los Angeles, after driving off from her mother’s house despite being allegedly drunk.

Her daughter followed her out to the car and grabbed hold of the passenger’s door handle as she begged her mom not to drive, Placentia Police said in a statement.

“Garcia looked at the child and proceed to drive away dragging her child alongside the vehicle for approximately 300 feet,” police said.

A male bystander who witnessed the ordeal intervened by briefly stopping Garcia’s car.

His attempts to get Garcia out of the car failed and he ended up being dragged a short distance after she allegedly drove off again.

Police responding to the scene a short time later said they eventually found Garcia hiding behind some bushes in her mother’s backyard.
