Grant Shapps urged to swiftly adopt EU speed limiters and other key safety measures

In a letter to Shapps, the former Transport Ministers said not adopting the new standards “risks putting the UK automotive industry at a competitive disadvantage”.

The main changes that are set to be introduced include the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology, advanced emergency braking systems and event data recorders.

The signatories of the letter also pointed to the Department for Transport’s (DfT) consultation on “modernising vehicles standards”.

They said this could “give the United Kingdom an opportunity to reclaim its position as a world leader in vehicle safety standards and technology”.
