‘I hope he NEVER referees a fight of mine again’: Jorge Masvidal blasts Herb Dean by claiming history of unfair treatment from UFC veteran
- Jorge Masvidal was frustrated by Herb Dean’s refereeing in his last defeat
- Colby Covington struck a low blow but Dean warned him and said carry on
- ‘Gamebred’ never wants the referee to look after any of his fights again
- He says contests with Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone were questionable
Jorge Masvidal never wants UFC veteran referee Herb Dean to take charge another of his fights.
‘Gamebred’ was frustrated by Dean’s officiating of his defeat by fierce rival Colby Covington and has believes he has a track record of tough calls with the 51-year-old in charge.
‘I’m not a fan of Herb Dean, man, I’ll tell you that much,’ said Masvidal on The MMA Hour.

Masvidal complained about a groin strike and eye poke during his fight with Colby Covington
The welterweight contender was unhappy about an alleged eye poke an knee to the groin against Covington. ‘Chaos’ was warned on both occasions but no further action was taken.
Masvidal added: ‘We’ve had a couple of problems, and the Donald Cerrone [fight] was one of them, as well. Jake Ellenberger, as well. I just, I don’t know, I don’t think I’m his cup of tea, and he kind of takes it out [on me] when [he’s] refereeing.
‘He’s done some things that I’m like, it’s kind of weird, and then I get clearly, clearly [Covington] throws a low blow – that I’m not saying this changes the outcome – but clearly he throws a low blow that’s intentional, and Herb doesn’t do anything about it, just gives him a little warning. I don’t know.
‘I hope that as long as I compete, Herb Dean never referees a fight of mine or judges it.’
Masvidal lost against his bitter rival Colby Covington at UFC 272 earlier this year
Masvidal has the right to request that Dean no longer oversees his fights and there is a precedent after Jon Jones claimed Jon McCarthy treated him unfairly, asking for the legendary former UFC referee not to take charge of his fights.
Dean has been refereeing in the world’s leading MMA organisation since 2004 and is vastly experienced.
His career has not been without controversy but Dana White and Joe Rogan have both referred to him as ‘gold standard’.
Dean won the Fighters Only Magazine referee of the year award nine times and has not responded to Masvidal’s remarks.
Masvidal currently stands accused of assaulting Covington outside a steakhouse in Miami Beach and faces felony charges for battery and criminal mischief.
