Joy as dog returned eight YEARS after going missing: ‘Couldn't believe it!'

Jayne and Stuart Wylie’s spaniel, Cassie, disappeared from their garden in Surrey in 2013. The couple, from near Redhill, launched an appeal to find their missing pet, but no information ever led back to Cassie. They were then stunned to receive a call from the authorities giving them the good news almost a decade after their appeals for her safe return.

But Cassie didn’t come alone – she was found with three puppies thought to be her own.

She was discovered after a joint police and RSPCA operation in West Sussex, around an hour’s drive away from the Wylies’s residence.

Mrs Wylie described her disbelief that their beloved pet had finally returned to them.

She said: “I just couldn’t believe it.

“I was just in shock, utter shock. I’d given up really, to be honest with you.”

She described how the couple first came to own Cassie as a way of coping with their grief.

Mrs Wylie recalled: “We got Cassie because we lost our son. To pull us all together.

“So it was really difficult when we lost her. Really difficult.

Inspector Fisher added: “The inflated prices of puppies has resulted in unscrupulous individuals breeding dogs purely for profit.

“I would urge anyone considering buying a puppy to think carefully about who they buy from.”

Mrs Wylie said that they had passed on the puppies to homes they knew would be welcomed and cared for.

She said: “They were just a bit overwhelming.

“We gave them to people who knew would love them and look after them.”

The couple is now calling for all vets to check every pet thoroughly for a microchip, and thanked everyone who helped them in their eight-year-long search.

They said via Facebook: “We would just like to say a great big thank you to all the people that have helped over the years and given us support in trying to find Cassie.

“We are giving her lots of love and she is getting on well with our other dog. It’s just amazing. Should be made into a film! It was the best Christmas present.”
