Grass growth slows down during the winter months, which means it doesn’t need to be cut as often, although maintaining it is recommended. With the warmer months just around the corner, one expert has advised gardeners to begin cutting their lawn.

David Truly, the MD of Greensleeves, explained: “Now is a great time to really focus on lawn renovation after the cold, dark months of winter.

“Even though you’ll have kept mowing your lawn as the grass kept growing during winter, it’s reinvigorated by warmer weather, so spring can help make the most of your lawn’s potential.

“During this time of the year, it is important to put a plan in motion to get your lawn set up for the rest of the year.”

The experts first tip is to remove moss from the lawn, which would have likely developed over the winter.

The expert explained: “Not only does this improve your lawn’s quality, but it also repairs bare patches and makes the lawn hardier by increasing shade and drought tolerance, as well as resistance to disease.”

While some people may not be thinking about mowing their lawn for a few more weeks, David said “now is a great time” to “increase the frequency of your mowing”.

He added: “Cutting grass more regularly will help it as the growth rate increases.

“However, be mindful that some of the worst damage caused to lawns can be committed by their owners.

“Whether it’s cutting too low, not frequently enough or with full blades, poor mower practice can cause damage to your prized lawn.”

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), feeding the lawn can help to prevent weeds and moss from establishing.

They said: “Apply fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected.

“However, it’s important to know fertilisers use a lot of energy to make, so using the minimum required to keep your lawn in shape is best for the environment.”

Fertilisers can be purchased from garden centres and there are different types for different months of the year.

It is important to make sure gardeners are buying the correct fertiliser for their lawn, to help encourage growth.
