Legendary darts and speedway commentator Nigel Pearson dies at 52 as Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor joins those paying tribute to popular broadcaster

Legendary darts and speedway commentator Nigel Pearson has died at the age of 52. 

Pearson, who worked for talkSPORT since the radio station’s launch in 1995, also covered football.

Former darts star Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor was among those to pay tribute to Pearson, writing on Twitter: ‘Sad Sad news about Nigel Pearson passing away. Always polite and a good guy. RIP.’

British Speedway also posted a tribute to Pearson, writing: ‘It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we announce the passing of much loved sport commentator, presenter and journalist, Nigel Pearson, aged 52, earlier today. We ask everyone to fully respect Nigel’s family’s privacy at this time.’

Former world champion darts player Gerwyn Price said that he is ‘shocked and saddened’ by the death of Pearson.

He wrote: ‘Shocked and saddened of the passing of Nigel Pearson great guy great commentator will be deeply missed my thoughts are with all his family and friends’.

talkSPORT posted a tribute to Pearson, writing: ‘RIP @NigelPearson A talented commentator, reporter and the brilliant voice of our darts coverage. 

‘Nigel was part of the talkSPORT team right from the launch of the station. We’re all shocked by his death today.’

West Bromwich Albion wrote: ‘We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Nigel Pearson. An inspirational broadcaster. A huge Albion fan. A true friend. Our thoughts are with Nigel’s family at this desperately sad time. We’ll miss you so, so much Nige’.
