Suarez admitted he would have liked to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano but was shown the exit door and did not have a conversation about his future with boss Diego Simeone (above)
He said: ‘Rafa Alique (Atletico director of communications) told me the day before my farewell, that they were going to give me a farewell. I did not know anything. I am 35 years old and I was also thinking about my future.
‘We had a meeting with the club in December, we agreed to talk in February, and Alique told me that they were going to give me a farewell and I said, ‘well, at least someone from the club tells me something’. He too was supposedly surprised.’
When asked if he had a conversation with ‘Cholo’ (boss Simeone), Suarez simply added: ‘No’. And when the 35-year-old, 132-cap international was asked what his next club would be, he insisted his future is uncertain.
Suarez will now leave Atletico as a free agent but does not know where he will go next season
‘I swear I don’t (know). Trust me, I’ve not decided where I’m gonna play next season. I’ve received are many options, many proposals… I am lucky to make the decision, I listen to everyone, but when the time comes we will make the decision.
‘Clubs from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico approached me but I want to play at top competitive level again. I’m focused on European football.
‘I have my head in Europe. Spain? Obviously I left a great legacy here, I’m very proud of the career I’ve had here. I have received some… proposals from here, but I am still analysing them. I want to see the project of being able to compete at a high level.’
