Manchester United’s disappointing defeat by Wolves was compounded by the bookings collected by Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay, which have ruled the influential pair out of the next Premier League match at Aston Villa.
Left-back Shaw and midfielder McTominay both collected their fifth bookings of the season in the second half of Monday’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
It means that they will both be suspended for the league encounter at Villa Park on January 15, but will be available to face Villa in the FA Cup five days earlier.
Midfielder Scott McTominay picked up his fifth booking of the season against Wolves
McTominay was cautioned by referee Mike Dean just after half time for fouling Wolves winger Daniel Podence.
Shaw was shown a yellow card in the 56th minute, also for a foul on Podence.
Premier League rules state that any player that collects five yellow cards in the first 19 league fixtures will serve a one-match ban.

McTominay’s absence against Villa will be a blow to manager Ralf Rangnick as the the Scot has been ever-present under the interim boss.
Meanwhile, Shaw has recently forced his way back into the team after Alex Telles was preferred against Crystal Palace, Norwich and Newcastle.
