Arsenal icon Paul Merson has labelled the decision to give Bruno Fernandes a new four-year contract as ‘strange’, with the Portuguese star reportedly now earning around £240,000 a week.

United announced on Friday that the Portuguese star had committed his long-term future to the club having agreed fresh terms until June 2026, with an option to extend it by a further year.

But while Fernandes has left United chiefs impressed and has been rewarded as such, Merson believes the timing of the new contract is a ‘big call’ given they haven’t decided on who will be taking over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick in the summer.

Merson also claims that Fernandes ‘hasn’t set the world alight’ at Old Trafford this season, leaving him to question why a new deal has been given.

‘Bruno Fernandes’ contract situation is an interesting one and pretty much sums up where Manchester United are as a club at the moment,’ Merson told Sportskeeda.

‘I’m not saying he’s a bad player by any stretch of the imagination, but how can they give someone a five-year contract when they haven’t even got a permanent manager?

‘What if a new manager comes in and doesn’t quite fancy Fernandes, because there’s every chance coaches won’t like the way he throws his hands up in frustration or his style of play.

‘He’s a good player and I like him, but he hasn’t set the world alight at Manchester United this season.

‘I just find it a bit strange that they’ve given a massive long-term contract to a player when they haven’t sorted out their managerial dilemma, it’s a big call by the club.’

Fernandes quickly became one of the club’s most important players after arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, where he has scored 49 goals and provided 39 assists in 117 appearances.

The 27-year-old revealed that his dream of playing for the Red Devils has become a ‘reality’ and that he was ‘honoured’ to extend his stay at the club.

Bruno Fernandes told the club’s official website: ‘From the moment that I joined Manchester United, I have had a special relationship with the club and our amazing fans. I grew up watching this team, dreaming of getting the chance to play here one day.

‘That dream is now a reality and an honour.

‘Even after two years, it still feels amazing to step out at Old Trafford, to hear the fans sing my song and to score in front of the Stretford End. It is a true privilege to wear this shirt and to fight for our incredible club.

‘There is so much more that I want to achieve here, and I know that is the same for the rest of the squad and staff. More than anything, we want to give the fans the success that they deserve.

‘We have shared some great moments over the last years, but the best is yet to come from myself and this team.’
