Manchester United's loss at Liverpool is 'embarrassing' and 'humiliating', says Ralf Rangnick

‘Embarrassing. Disappointing. Humiliating’: Ralf Rangnick pulls no punches as he says Manchester United are ‘SIX YEARS’ behind Liverpool… and claims up to ‘TEN’ players could join in summer rebuild

Ralf Rangnick described Liverpool’s mauling of Manchester United at Anfield as ’embarrassing’ and ‘humiliating’ before confirming a summer rebuild could see as many as 10 new faces this summer.

United were well below the level of title-chasing Liverpool on Tuesday night and produced a display to that effect as Mohamed Salah bagged a brace to add to strikes from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane.

Having lost 5-0 in the reverse at Old Trafford, United has lost the season head-to-head 9-0 on aggregate and Rangnick feels Jurgen Klopp’s side are six years ahead of where United find themselves slumped right now.

‘It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating,’ interim boss Rangnick told BBC Match of the Day.

‘We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now.

‘When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.’

Diaz had the enviable task of a tap in inside five minutes before Salah got his first to make it 2-0 after 22 minutes.

‘I don’t think a different formation at the start would have changed anything,’ Rangnick continued.

‘The first goal we conceded, it was not part of the game plan to be that high up and concede a counter-attack after five minutes. That changed the game.

‘The first half, we were just not good enough. We did not win any first ball or second balls. We were second best in all relevant areas.’

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is closing in on signing a four-year deal to take over Manchester United in the summer but he has his work cut out.

Paul Pogba, who went off early in the first half, sees his contract expire in the summer and Rangnick, who will adopt a consultancy role with the club at the end of the season, confirmed that a major rebuild is going to take place to fix this group.

‘There will be a rebuild here,’ he told reporters in his post-match press conference.  ‘Six, seven, maybe 10 new players will come’

‘(Liverpool) have better players than we have and this was really reflected by the result today.

‘There will be a rebuild for sure, that was obvious in the first three or four weeks for me. For us it is extremely embarrassing as a coaching staff to sit here and have a press conference like this. We just have to admit they are better than us.’

Asked why it went so wrong for United – in a game where they barely had a kick – Rangnick simply pointed to the gulf between the sides in this moment after two games in which United have come out 9-0 losers on aggregate.

‘They are one of the best, if not the best, team in the world and we are far from that,’ Rangnick added to Sky Sports

‘We are not physical or athletic enough. If we want to have a chance we have to cause problems and use our counter attacking moment and we didn’t.’

‘I’m pretty sure all the players in the starting XI knew the importance of that game. In order to get something out of a game you have to be on them – in the first half we didn’t do that. In second half we did for 25 minutes but it wasn’t enough.’

United’s cumulative 9-0 defeat against Liverpool was the second-worst in the club’s history, only surpassed by the 11-0 over two games they suffered against Sunderland in 1892-93.
