Met Office weather warning: 'Severe' 75mph gales threaten travel chaos and power blackouts

Severe gales this morning will persist for several hours before wind slowly begins to ease a little later this afternoon. Gusts of 70 to 75 miles per hour are possible in a few places, most likely over parts of the Outer Hebrides.

The Met Office warns that some delays to road, air and ferry transport are likely, as well as delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

It adds that there will be some short term loss of power and other services, and is likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by large waves.

Strathclyde is also on the Met Office warning list with similar conditions.
