Newcastle ‘see £30m bid for Sven Botman REJECTED’ by Lille and they are set to be rivalled by AC Milan for centre back’s signature if they decide to increase their bid for the Dutchman

  • Newcastle have reportedly had a £30m bid for Sven Botman turned down by Lille
  • According to the Telegraph, Lille have said the Dutch defender is not for sale
  • The Magpies have placed Botman, 21, on top of their list of centre back targets
  • Newcastle are confident of doing a deal with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier

Newcastle have had a £30million bid for Dutch defender Sven Botman knocked back by Lille, it has been claimed.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the Ligue 1 champions have informed Newcastle that the Holland Under-21 international is not for sale.

But that is not believed to have completely deterred Newcastle, who are deciding whether or not to up their bid in order to get their man immediately.

But they are expected to face competition for the Dutchman’s signature from AC Milan, who are battling neighbours Inter for the Serie A title and desperately need cover for Simon Kjaer, who injured his knee last month and is expected to be out for the rest of the season.

Sportsmail reported last month that Botman was top of Newcastle’s list of potential centre backs, the area they need to strengthen most if they are to avoid a humiliating relegation after being bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund earlier this season.

Botman said before that he would only leave Lille to join another Champions League club although his stance is thought to have changed when he learned of Newcastle’s interest.

Botman, 21, appeared in all but one of Lille’s league games on their march to the French title, beating mega-rich Paris Saint-Germain to the crown.

A towering presence at 6ft5in, Botman would be a major boost to Eddie Howe’s side, who have conceded 23 times this season and have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League, with only bottom-placed Norwich conceding more goals.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are confident of doing a deal with Atletico Madrid right back Kieran Trippier later this month.

Sportsmail has reported that Trippier is prepared to end his stay in the Spanish capital in order to return to the Premier League, while Newcastle view the England international as potential captain material.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said at the weekend that there will not be much his side can do if Trippier pushes for a move to St James’ Park.

‘We have always had to live with these types of situations,’ he said.

‘Important players for the team have always had the chance to leave. Then it will depend on what the player wants and it’s up to us to adapt to what happens.

‘Once a footballer makes a choice, there is not too much we can do as coaches apart from telling Trippier how important he is for our team.’
