Petrol cars 'tipping point' is 'clearly on the horizon' in blow for private ownership

Sales of battery electric vehicles has risen from two percent in 2019 to 12 percent last year.

The total sales of alternative vehicles was now the same as petrol (46 percent), according to the SMMT.

The Government has an aim to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by the end of the decade.

But at the current rate, petrol and diesel cars could be non-existent at forecourts within just four to five years.
