Prince Andrew sparks row as furious Scots demand Duke LOSE Earl of Inverness title

A Scottish MP has demanded Andrew’s title of Earl of Inverness be axed. It follows claims by an MP in York that his association with the city “must end”, asking for him to relinquish the title of Duke of York.

Virginia Giuffre, formerly known as Virginia Roberts, accuses him of committing “sexual assault and battery” upon her when she was a teenager.

Andrew has consistently denied all accusations against him.

Given the Firm’s decision to strip him of his military titles and Royal patronages, he will fight the case as a private citizen.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “With the Queen’s approval and agreement, the Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to the Queen.

“The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.”

York is trying to break its link with Andrew, too.

The city’s Labour MP Rachael Maskell said: “It’s untenable for the Duke of York to cling on to his title another day longer; this association with York must end.

“There’s a very serious allegation made against this man of privilege and entitlement.

“I’m working with agencies to tackle sexual violence and misogyny.”

Darryl Smalley, a Liberal Democrat who is an executive member for culture, leisure and communities on the city of York council, shared similar views.

Saying the association with Andrew is damaging the city’s prestige, he argued: “I think the vast majority of people in York feel exactly the same in protecting the reputation of the city.

“York is fantastic, we have got a lot to be proud of and one thing we don’t want is to be so burdened with this link to Prince Andrew.

“I think many people think he has lost all his titles.

“In York, we are acutely aware that is not the case.”
