- They were looking to sign a new forward after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left
- However, the Argentine has struggled to impress during his spell in Paris
- Gunners supporters took to Twitter to express their relief at not signing Icardi
- Fans claimed the forward comes with ‘baggage’ due to his off-field antics
Relieved Arsenal fans have praised ‘wise’ Mikel Arteta for not pursuing a move for Mauro Icardi in Janaury, claiming the PSG forward’s off-field antics could ‘derail a project’ at the Emirates.
The Gunners were looking to sign a forward after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left to join Barcelona on a free transfer, with Arteta left with just Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette up top.
Reports from The Athletic on Monday claimed that Arsenal were presented with the chance to sign Icardi from PSG with the Ligue 1 willing to explore the idea of a potential swap deal involving the Argentinian striker.

However, the reports went on to claim that Arsenal decided to stick with their current options for the remainder of the season, with Icardi not the type of player Arteta was keen to bring in.
The decision not to go for Icardi was music to Arsenal fans’ ears on social media, with several Gunners supporters claiming the 28-year-old comes with plenty of ‘baggage’ – months on after he was publically accused by wife Wanda Nara of cheating.
And with the forward struggling for minutes and goals in Ligue 1, Arsenal fans praised the club for not signing him last month.
One Arsenal fan wrote: ‘The Athletic report that #Arsenal rejected a deal for an Icardi / Auba swap fills me with confidence on our targets. Icardi brings more baggage than talent and he’s the kind of player who could derail a project. Arteta and Edu were absolutely right to stick to the guns.’

Another agreed, adding that the north London club should be pursuing moves for Real Sociedad star Alexander Isak, Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Lille’s Jonathan David instead.
They wrote: ‘Wise move from Arteta. ‘Icardi is even worse then aubameyang if auba left arsenal because he wasn’t discipline. Icardi is the most chaotic footballer and his wife they would have start a war. Icardi doesn’t fit arsenal need to go for isak or calvert lewin or Jonathan David.’
Another claimed they would rather Lacazette be afforded the minutes for the rest of the season, saying: ‘What can Icardi bring to this Arsenal team? Thank God Arteta didn’t settle for it, would rather play Lacazette for the rest of the season.’
One fan praised Arteta for the decision while saying the club didn’t need more drama.

‘Good decision by Mikel Arteta..Arsenal already has more than enough drama than for Icardi to add to it,’ they tweeted.
Following the public spat in October and quick reconciliation, Icardi and wife Wanda appeared to be heading for another marriage crisis when the striker unfollowed his wife on Instagram.
Icardi then reportedly changed his profile picture before deleting his Instagram profile all together, according to Bild.
Icardi joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan in 2019 and scored 20 goals in 31 appearances before the season was curtailed due to Covid.
As a result, PSG made the decision to sign Icardi permanently, tying the forward to a four-year deal which will run until 2024.

The French champions agreed to pay a fee of £45million to acquire the Argentine’s services, although they are now willing to let him go.
Icardi has gone on to score 38 goals in 87 outings for PSG. However, he has struggled to cement a regular place in the starting XI.
He is competing against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar for a spot in the team, with manager Mauricio Pochettino often favouring his star trio.
Reports at the beginning of January also suggested that Icardi had fallen out with compatriot Messi, leading to reports that he would be heading for the exit.
