‘I didn’t know he could do that… what a volley!’: Robbie Earle heaps praise on Chelsea’s new man Kalidou Koulibaly after stunning goal against Tottenham on his home debut at Stamford Bridge

  • Kalidou Koulibaly scored a brilliant volley to put Chelsea 1-0 up against Spurs
  • Robbie Earle joked ‘I didn’t know he could do that’ after watching the goal back
  • Chelsea were twice pegged back as a feisty clash at Stamford Bridge ended 2-2

Soccer fans across the world were left stunned on Sunday afternoon when central defender Kalidou Koulibaly channeled his inner striker to score a brilliant volley on his home Chelsea debut – and Robbie Earle was no different on NBC Sports.

The former Napoli superstar is not renowned for his goalscoring ability, but all previous form was out the window when he fired in a brilliant opening goal against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

NBC pundit Earle was among those shocked to see the goal, and at halftime he said: ‘Well, Koulibaly was brought to strengthen the defense, I didn’t know he could do this kind of thing, the big defender! What a volley this is.’

The former Jamaica international went on to slam Tottenham for their lackluster first-half display, claiming that they offered ‘nothing’ for the entire first 45 minutes.

‘Chelsea have dominated possession, created chances, been good on the ball when they’ve gone forward, been good without it to the point where they stopped Kane, Son and Kulusevski — they’ve had the three lowest touches of any players in the Spurs team,’ he noted.

‘[Spurs have] not been in the game, not been a threat. The midfield players are blocking the ball into Kane to stop the counter attack, defenders are coming tight when they go short. Spurs have got nothing.

‘The only disappointment I’d say for Chelsea is they’re only 1-0 up.’

And that disappointment was realized in the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalized for Spurs to level the game up and create havoc on the sidelines.

Managers Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte squared up to each other and had to be separated by officials as a melee with all 22 players and the benches ensued.

Shortly after, though, Chelsea took the advantage again, with Reece James putting them 2-1 up.
