Scottish teachers demand urgent 10% pay rise – top earners could rake in SIX-figure sum


Scottish unions have put pressure on Nicola Sturgeon to bring in a double-digit pay rise for teachers to help alleviate the cost of living crisis. The move, which is said to “help them cope” as inflation soars, was described as “reasonable and fair”.

It would mean teachers on a salary of £40,000 would take home an extra £4,000 a year.

Scottish headteachers, who are paid the top band £98,808, would see their pay tip beyond the six-figure mark to £108,688.

However, in a letter to the employer part of the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers, staff claimed: “The 2022 SNCT pay claim is for 10 percent to be applied to all grades and pay points without differentiation or discrimination.”

The letter added: “It is also the Panel’s view that the on-going commitment and professionalism of teachers and associated professionals, which has been brought into sharp focus during the Covid-19 pandemic, now needs to be recognised by a pay increase that allows salaries to retain their value.”

A spokesperson from COSLA, which describes itself as the voice for local government in Scotland, said: “Like the whole of our workforce, Local Government values our teachers.

“We are committed to achieving an affordable settlement and we remain in active discussions with both the Scottish Government and the Trade Unions within the SNCT.”

The Educational Institute of Scotland’s general secretary Larry Flanagan added: “The pay claim will need to address the cost of living crisis and the ongoing restorative pay issues. It will have to be a significant sum.”

Inflation in the UK currently stands at 5.4 percent.

He added: “And in some ways, the worst is still to come because although food price inflation in Tesco over the last quarter was only 1 per cent, we are impacted by rising energy prices; our suppliers are impacted by rising energy prices.”
