Sir Jason and Dame Laura Kenny revealed they accidentally ignored the email that offered them their honours.

The Team GB cyclists were included on the New Year’s honours list following their latest success at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Jason, 33, claiming his seventh Olympic gold in the keirin at the Games in Tokyo, and Laura, 29, her fourth via the madison, taking their collective total to 11.

The couple were among 78 Olympians and Paralympians honoured for their services to sport and are now the first husband and wife to gain knighthoods and damehoods in the same list.

But they revealed the hilarious moment they had discovered they had been offered their kighthood and damehood.

Speaking to ITV via The Mirror, the pair admitted that they accidentally ignored the initial email invite for the honours, with Sir Jason even mixing it up with a parking ticket.

‘You get sent an email, don’t you,’ Dame Laura said.

‘And you are supposed to reply to this email but neither of us actually replied to said email.’

Jason then laughingly added: ‘We got confused with the date because I got a parking ticket at the same time and I had to pay the parking ticket before the 14th… So we got a bit confused with our response dates.’

The 33-year-old then revealed that they had received a phone call to confirm their attendance as he joked he did not want to keep the Queen or Prime Minister waiting.

‘So we had a phone call – it was a funny phone call,’ he said.

‘The lady on the end was very nice and said ‘could you let us know before the weekend because we’ve got to tell the prime minister and the Queen about it’.

‘I was like, well, best not to keep them waiting!’

Despite the mix up, Laura said it was a ‘childhood dream’ to be recognised for their hard work on the track.

‘Every time we step on the track it’s to try and win a medal,’ she said.

‘Any other accolade, you never strive to get, but when you do get it, it just shows that people are appreciating the hard work you are putting in on the track.

‘It just feels incredible to be recognised for that. You never in your childhood dreams think you’re going to be a dame or a sir.’
