Storm Franklin is expected to hit the UK within a few hours, with both yellow and amber Met Office warnings in place. The storm was forecasted to hit Scotland and Northern Ireland, before slowly moving south into England.

11am – The low-pressure system is still off the north coast of the UK, but strong winds have started to reach North Ireland and some parts of England.

Wind speeds are currently at about 45mph and rising. As Sunday progresses, coastal areas could expect up to 75mph winds, the Met Office forecasted.

By early Monday morning, northern areas of Northern Ireland will be covered by an amber weather warning.

Winds could exceed 80mph, potentially leading to damaged buildings and travel disruption.

10am – Storm Franklin is expected to first reach the UK at about midday, according to the Met Office.

There’s a yellow wind warning in place for Northern Ireland and England from 12pm on Sunday until 1pm on Monday.

Franklin is currently northwest of the UK, in the North Atlantic Ocean.

It’s making its way southeast from Iceland, making landfall on the west coast of Northern Ireland.

9.45am – The Met Office has officially named Storm Franklin as the low-pressure system expected to hit the UK on Sunday night.

It’s the third storm to be named in the UK this week, after Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice both caused carnage across the country.

While Franklin was forecasted to bring strong winds in excess of 80mph, it’s unlikely to be as fierce as Eunice, the Met Office said.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: “Following the significant impacts of Storm Eunice on Friday, Storm Franklin will bring further high winds for many late on Sunday and into Monday, although not on the same scale as Eunice.

“Coastal areas of Northern Ireland, especially on that north coast, will get the strongest wind gusts, which could be around 80mph in a few places.

“Amber and Yellow Wind Warnings have been issued, and people should remain cautious ahead of the system that will bring 50-60mph wind gusts for much of the UK from late on Sunday and through Monday.”
