  • The coronavirus pandemic has meant no events have been held in the capital
  • However, the UFC will make its long-awaited return in just eight weeks
  • Tom Aspinall, Jack Shore and Mike Grundy have been confirmed to feature
  • Dana White hinted that rising star Paddy Pimblett could also fight on the card

The UFC is set for a huge return to London on March 19, three years on from its last appearance, before the coronavirus pandemic began.

The MMA organisation confirmed on Wednesday that it will stage a Fight Night at The O2 Arena in eight weeks, their 12th live event in the British capital in its history.

It is the first time the UFC has staged an event in London since UFC Fight Night 147 on March `6, 2019, when Jorge Masvidal silenced the masses after brutally knocking out Liverpool’s Darren Till.

Tyron Woodley was scheduled to take on Birmingham’s Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 171 in March 2020 but the event was cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

UFC president Dana White has delighted in the latest announcement, revealing he ‘can’t wait’ to experience the ‘incredible’ atmosphere London has to offer.

‘Every time we put on an event in London it’s an unbelievable experience,’ he said.

‘The fans are incredible, and the fights are always off the charts. It’s a different kind of energy in England. And I can’t wait to get back there with a fight card on March 19th.’

The March 19 card is likely to feature plenty of British and European-based fighters, with Tom Aspinall, Mike Grundy and Jack Shore set to fight in the capital.

Paddy Pimblett is also expected to step into the Octagon at The O2. The lightweight made a sensational UFC debut last year and fans are excited to see The Baddy back in action again.

White said that Pimblett is set to take on rival Jared Gordon on March 19, although the Liverpudlian’s manager, Graham Boylan, has insisted that no agreement has been reached yet.
