Former England goalkeeper Rob Green mocked his famous 2010 World Cup blunder after the Three Lions drew the United States in the group stage of this year’s tournament.
In Friday’s draw, it was discovered that England will play the USA, Iran and one of Wales, Scotland or Ukraine in Qatar this winter.
It will be the first time that England and USA have met competitively since Green let Clint Dempsey’s 25-yard strike squirm into the back of the net through his palms.
England’s World Cup draw brought up memories of Rob Green’s mistake against USA in 2010
After the draw for the 2022 World Cup was announced, memories instantly went back to the 1-1 draw in South Africa for many England fans.
There was no surprise that this was the same for Green who immediately took to social media and posted a pair of eyes emoji in obvious reference to his mistake 12 years ago.
One follower responded: ‘Fair play, at least you can laugh about it now,’ while another joked: ‘I get flashbacks of that day Rob. Let’s hope Ramsdale/Pickford don’t do the same.’
Green made no excuses about his mistake as he said after the 2010 stalemate: ‘I walked in at half-time and said sorry to the chaps and I apologise to however many million people at home as well.
‘It was a mistake, a genuine, horrible mistake. Games go at 100mph and these things happen.’
Green made 12 appearances for England though he is most remembered for the costly mistake against the United States.
Following the error he was dropped and replaced by David James who played in England’s next outing – a goalless draw with Algeria.

Green went on to lose his place in the England squad on the back of his mistake against USA
He did not appear again in the World Cup and was omitted from the first England squad named after the tournament.
Green was eventually brought back into the start for Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.
He made his one and only appearance after the World Cup in a 1-0 friendly win over Norway.
England struggled to ever get going at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Fabio Capello’s side scraped out of the group after a 1-0 victory over Slovenia on Matchday 3 and were knocked out after a 4-1 thumping by Germany in the Round of 16.
